Suitable modernisation of historic buildings is a challenge that generates extremely diverse tasks for the developed European metropolises in particular. The third pocket architectural guide to Hamburg tackles this issue and presents projects actually implemented in recent years as well as further plans to be realised soon. The volume takes a look at changes that affect buildings of very different ages in fast succession, whether due to the optimising of energy use, extensions, conversions, added floors, incorporation into new urban-developmental contexts, or dealing with existing listed structures while saving on resources, which may include a decision against demolition and in favour of intelligent re-use. All the projects are presented together with key data, an explanatory text, and their location on maps. Hanno Rauterberg also gives a survey of Hamburg as a changing city, while short portraits of Hamburgs seven districts uncover specific local features.
