Der Band thematisiert die Prozesse der drastisch nachlassenden Reproduktionskraft der evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland. Sie wird nicht nur kleiner, sondern unbedeutender. Das beeinträchtigt ihre Finanzierung, ihre Ausstrahlung, die »Spannkraft« ihrer Aktivitäten, die Motivation der Mitarbeitenden - insgesamt ihre Plausibilität in der Gesellschaft. Der Blick richtet sich auf Gottesdienste, Musik, Religions- und Konfirmandenunterricht, familiale Sozialisation, Jugendarbeit, Diakonie, Pfarrpersonen und Ehrenamtliche sowie sonstige Gelegenheiten und entwickelt auf empirischer Grundlage theoretische Perspektiven zum Zusammenspiel von Glaube und Kirche.
