Elephantine ist eine Nil-Insel im Süden Ägyptens. In diesem Handels- und Grenzzentrum lebte eine einmalig diverse Bevölkerung. Verschiedenste Sprachen, Kulturen und Religionen trafen hier aufeinander. Es ist der einzige Ort weltweit, an dem Kulturgeschichte durch schriftliche Quellen über einen Zeitraum von 4.000 Jahren »nachgelesen« werden kann. Tausende Texte sind auf Papyrus oder Tonscherben in zehn verschiedenen Sprachen und Schriften verfasst, darunter Hieroglyphen, Aramäisch, Koptisch oder Arabisch.
